October Civil War Reenactment

A Civil War reenactment named the Battle of Morseville was sponsored by the Northwestern Illinois Friends of the NRA, hosted by the 3rd Iowa Light Artillery and held on the farm of the Pierce family the first weekend in October, 2008 south of the town of Stockton in beautiful Jo Daviess County, Illinois. Rolling farmland, spreading oak trees, and a meandering creek in a forty acre pasture became a scene of battle between the North and South over a small wooden bridge.

Friday evening the reenactors and their families arrived and set up camp. Saturday was a full day of events including a battle, medical demonstration, fashion show, quilt raffle and access to the camps and sutlers' tents for memorabilia. Sunday, in spite of a morning of rain, participants held a church service, battle, and the Friends of the NRA held a raffle, including a .22 caliber lever action Henry rifle, and an 1851 Navy Colt replica percussion revolver.

This is the tenth year reenactments have taken place in Jo Daviess County, Illinois.

Articles on the event can be found in the Freeport Journal-Standard dated October 3rd and 6th.
